June CreekSpeak: Putah Creek Salmon Research & Monitoring

Join Putah Creek Council's second CreekSpeak talk of 2018 on June 21, 2018.
CreekSpeak is Putah Creek Council's six-month series of community talks about the nature, culture, and history of our region.
Through the hard work of a whole community, Putah Creek is being restored to a beautiful, functional river. Each fall it now attracts hundreds to thousands of adult salmon who arrive to spawn in the gravel riverbed. Where did these fish come from? Where are their offspring going? How do we learn about these fish now calling Putah Creek home? Researchers at UC Davis are trying to answer these questions by monitoring the adults and juveniles, by examining the microchemistry of their otoliths (ear bones), and by looking at their genetic relationships to one another.
Our presenter this month is Dr. Anna Steel, a postdoctoral researcher with the Fangue Laboratory at UC Davis. Her research informs fish conservation through examining movement, behavior, and physiology.
CreekSpeak talks are free to Putah Creek Council members and open to the public. A $5 donation is requested from those who have not yet joined the Council.
The talks alternate between Davis and Winters on the third Thursday of the month. Additional talks in 2018 will include:
