Volunteer Monitoring: Evolving Bacteria Monitoring Programs
In response to heightened public awareness of high fecal bacteria levels at popular recreation sites, there is a need for increased monitoring. Citizen science bacteria monitoring programs are helping to widen the coverage of data collection and to provide timely notification of high bacteria levels in recreational waters. This webinar will present methods used by citizen science programs to measure bacteria; how data enhance public notification programs; and how data help to identify pollution problems. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force will share their perspectives on the values and challenges of working with volunteer bacteria monitoring programs.
