Small Water Systems Drought Preparedness Conference

Thu, Nov 1st 2007, 8:30am - 5:00pm
California expects drought: history tells us the question is not "if," but "when." Yet the ability of small water supply systems to plan for droughts and emergencies is severely limited, given that most have no staffs to deal with planning or management issues. Nearly 90 percent of California's community water systems are small water systems and many are located in lightly populated, rural areas where opportunities for interconnections with another system or water transfers are nonexistent.

A one-day conference, "Small Water Supply Systems: Assessment of Drought Preparedness," set for Nov. 1 at the Sacramento Convention Center will bring together rural counties and organizations to raise awareness of special problems faced by small systems, hardest hit in a drought, and to discuss their needs and the resources available.

Workshop topics include:

- Overview of Small System Operations
- Special Problems of Foothill and Small Coastal Systems Using Wells
- Grants and Other Resources Available
- Unmet Needs
- Developing Strategies to Help Small Systems be Better Prepared for Drought

Check in will begin at 8:30 a.m. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m. Registration for this one-day event is $150. Scholarships are available. Contact the Foundation, 916-444-6240, for more information on scholarship qualifications.
