Functional Floodplains on the Central Valley's Regulated Lowland Rivers: A Vital Link to the Delta

Presented by Betty Andrews of Philip Williams & Associates, Ltd.

What do the floodplains of California's Central Valley have to do with the health of the Delta? It turns out, quite a lot, at least potentially. Betty Andrews of Philip Williams & Associates, Ltd. will talk about some of the emerging research on the ecological benefits provided by floodplains that have implications for the Delta. The ability of the landscape to provide these benefits will be then be discussed, drawing on work she and others at her firm have carried out in cooperation with Dr. Peter Moyle and Dr. Jeff Opperman of UC Davis. The presentation will conclude with a summary of remaining questions and initial recommendations for incorporating this emerging understanding into ecosystem restoration initiatives, with an opportunity for questions and discussion by the workshop participants
