Western pond turtle populations are experiencing a decline. In years past, California's native turtle was collected for the San Francisco market's " terrapin trade" as an ingredient for soups and stews. Today they face threats of urban development, habitat loss, and non-native predators.

Learn about the history of this unique species and what turtle research and conservation efforts are being done today.
