Exploring Solutions for California's Complex Water Issues

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) cordially invite you to a milestone workshop to discuss solutions for California's complex flood damage reduction issues.
Conference Purpose
The purpose of the Levee Conference is to bring together Engineers, Scientists, and Community Leaders to increase awareness and draw upon the experiences of other communities as we embark on an unprecedented investment in the Central Valley's Federal Levee Systems. We will evaluate the lessons learned from Katrina, learn from the experiences of the Dutch, and share the state of engineering and science in developing flood damage reduction projects. The conference will also include in-depth discussion of flood management policy issues ranging from continued development in areas with high risk of flooding to changes in the National Flood Insurance Program. Conference participants will increase their understanding of advances in design standards and the continued evolution of flood management principles.
Conference Topics
The Levee Conference will consist of plenary sessions with policy and technical breakout workshops. It will provide a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and share technical knowledge. Speakers will include elected officials, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Water Resources, local flood control agencies, renowned flood control experts, and leaders of the architect and engineering community. The conference will also include a presentation on the IPET findings from Hurricane Katrina and a presentation by the Dutch Delegation.
Themes and topics of the conference include:
· Lessons of history with levee systems,
· Planning, design and construction of levees,
· Levee policies and programs,
· Levees operation and maintenance, and
· Emergency preparedness.
