What is A Christmas Bird Count?
For 116 years, tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas have taken part in an adventure that has become a tradition across generations.

During the months of December and January, families, students, birders, and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission to identify and count every bird in the area.

Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action.

Why a Christmas Bird Count for Kids?
Young kids with their families are often not included with this important 24-hour rigorous “citizen science” effort. So, we are doing a CBC4Kids!

This event starts with a binocular boot camp, where young birders are taught how to properly use their binoculars. The teams then go out into the field and record all the birds they see in a 90 minute interval. The teams then return to the Nature Center at Rush Ranch for presentations, and a final tally.

The goal is to learn some of the basic skills kids need to become CBC citizen scientists, have fun, and gain an appreciation of birds and nature.

I hope you can join us!
