The Riparian Habitat Joint Venture Conference 2007 Integrating Riparian Habitat Conservation & Flood Management in California
Will be held December 4-6, 2007 in Sacramento (location details forthcoming)

Audience: Wildlife, fisheries, flood control and regulatory agencies and professionals; water, vegetation, and land managers; agriculture and ranch land owners, policy-makers and leaders; restoration, academic, and conservancy professionals; county and city planners

Format: Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon

1. Elements: Plenary and concurrent sessions; poster session; exhibits; potential for field trips and focused workshops

2. The plenary session will emphasize universal issues, the history of riparian community management and conservation, flood plain management and flood protection, and the obstacles and opportunities to improve and integrate these activities in the future.

3. Potential topics for the concurrent sessions include:
a. Riparian habitat essential to wildlife and where is this habitat in California b. Relationships of urban development to flood control and riparian conservation c. Progress of riparian restoration and protection in coastal and Inland California d. Role of conservancies and local government in protecting streams and rivers e. State integration regional water management with improving and safe-guarding agricultural water f. Progress of flood control projects and system improvements g. Integrating flood control, fisheries and riparian conservation, agriculture, and urban development h. Endangered/imperiled species recovery-what do we need to do and where i. Emerging priorities in how to spend Prop 1E and 84 funds j. Financial assistance for flood control and riparian habitat conservation k. Role and utility of riparian and flood plain mapping l. Role and utility of land easement and acquisition m. Floodplain development and riparian conservation n. Vegetation management and levee maintenance o. Regulatory conflicts- permits, authority, responsibility, liability p. Flood control and invasive species q. Successful and future partnerships needed to achieve integration

Next steps:
1. Finalizing conference site; and breadth of concurrent sessions.
2. Inviting plenary and key-note speakers.
3. Releasing Call-for-Papers and establishing website.
4. Pursuing agency, non-governmental, and corporate sponsorship.
5. Promote and publicize the conference.
