Volunteers Needed for New Native Plant Nursery in the North Bay!

Fri, Jun 16th 2006, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Be a founding volunteer and come help out on these very first volunteer projects at a new nursery in the North Bay. After several unavoidable delays, we are now ready to start work! The nursery is managed by the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, with support from many partnering groups, including Save The Bay, the Sonoma Land Trust, the Friends of San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and the Bay Institute, working with volunteers to support wetland restoration along Tolay Creek and other wetland sites in the Refuge. Join Save The Bay for regular monthly workdays where we will pot up native plants, in preparation for winter outplantings at these restoration projects starting in October 2006. No experience necessary. I have attached some information about our restoration projects and future dates below (just scroll down), including details on the site, directions, what to wear, etc. There is also information on Save The Bay's website at http://www.savesfbay.org/getinvolved/restorewetland/.

Groups and individuals are welcome. This is part of an ongoing native plant restoration project at Tolay Creek with Save The Bay and US Fish and Wildlife Service. No experience necessary. Families are welcome. Fulfills high school community service requirements.

Due to project planning and logistics, RSVP is requested.

What to Wear & Bring: Gloves and tools are provided. The site can be very windy. Dress in layers, bring a hat and wind jacket, and wear close-toed shoes to protect your feet. Long pants are recommended, but not required. Please also bring your own water bottle and help us cut down on plastic!

Site Information: Since 2001, Save The Bay has partnered with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to help restore Tolay Creek and the Tubbs Island Wetlands in San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge's overall goal at Tolay Creek is to restore 435 acres of diked, historic wetlands to tidal salt marsh, providing critical habitat for threatened and endangered species. This is a unique opportunity to experience wetland habitat in the North Bay and see areas where levees have been removed to restore farm fields into wetlands. Since 2001, Save The Bay has been supporting the project with the help of schools, community groups, non-profit organizations, and others to revegetate salt marsh habitat through planting native wetland plants and removing non-native invasive species. To date, our volunteers have removed nearly 8,000 pounds of non-native plants and have planted over 6,000 natives! This spring, we will also begin working with volunteers in a NEW Native Plant Nursery managed by the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge to propagate native plants for this and other restoration projects on the Refuge. The nursery is located at the new San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge headquarters at the Sears Point Property near the intersection of Hwy 37 and Hwy 121, recently acquired by the Sonoma Land Trust.
