A Botanical Event for Mother's Day!

Botanical Splendor: rare plants of eastern Lake County. A natural history talk and field trip presented by Joe Callizo, Botanist

The north coast ranges of California support a hodge-podge of plant communities living on what is a geologic hodge-podge of sedimentary, volcanic, and serpentine-derived soils. Serpentine-derived soils in particular occur in relatively distinct patches amidst other soil types. This patchiness in combination with the unique chemistry of serpentine soils underlies the evolution of unique and rare plant species associated with serpentine. Joe Callizo has been a botanist in the Lake/Napa counties region for 40 years and has monitored rare plant species at the McLaughlin Reserve in eastern Lake County for 20 years. Joe will give a presentation on the rare plants of eastern Lake and northwestern Napa Counties, and take us for a walk through parts of the Reserve with populations of some of these rare species.
