Water 101 – The Basics and Beyond

This day and a half course on California water basics and water district board member governance will be held February 18 and 19 on the Davis campus of the University of California. The course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. February 18 and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. February 19.  I have attached the full agenda and the course announcement  

This year the featured speaker is David Sedlak, author, Water 4.0: The Past, Present, and Future of the World’s Most Vital Resourc.  I actually heard David being interviewed on NPR recently and realized he would be perfect for this class.  He graciously agreed to speak about his just released book.  This enlightening new book discusses the three historical revolutions in urban water systems and the policies and technologies to reinvent our water systems. 

 

Top Speakers include: 

Lester Snow, state and federal appointee and veteran of the California water wars,discussing the declining ecosystem in this drought year and the crisis of ground water management

Dennis O’Connor, Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water, giving insights on working with and understanding the state legislature in the current interesting year

Byron Buck, State and Federal Contractors Water Agency, addressing the state’s water geography, hydrology and major water delivery systems

Educational sessions the first day will include discussions on:

  • California’s natural water environment
  • California’s water rights systems
  • Water demand and use
  • Current issues in water management including drought and groundwater management
  • The legal and institutional management framework

On the second day participants will be provided with:

  • A governance primer for water district directors that will include the roles and responsibilities of a director, legal requirements of board members and points on understanding the news media. 

 Cost: $250. Registration fee includes all educational materials, coffee breaks, lunch on February 18, and a graduation certificate upon completion of the day and a half course.  Scholarships are available on a case-by-case basis.
