Introduction to Ecology and Regulation of Tidal Wetlands

Wed, Aug 17th 2005, 8:30am - 5:00pm
Workshop is presented by the Coastal Training Program, Elkhorn Slough and the San Fransisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

"Introduction to Ecology and Regulation of Tidal Wetlands in Central California and the San Francisco Bay."

Intended Audience:
City and county municipality land-use planners, environmental consultants, and land managers. If your job entails protecting tidal wetlands, then you are welcome to attend.

Workshop Goal:
To introduce decision makers to the ecology of natural, managed, and restored tidal wetlands on California's central coast and San Francisco Bay, and how those wetlands are protected by regulatory agencies.

This will be a good workshop for you if you want answers to the following questions:
How do I recognize the various types of tidal wetlands?
What is the current and historical distribution of tidal wetlands in central California and the San Francisco Bay?
What birds and fish use tidal wetlands?
How are tidal wetlands regulated and why?

Instructors will include:
Dr. Peter Baye, independent consultant; Dr. John Callaway, Associate Professor of Environmental Science, University of San Francisco; Mark Herzog, Program Leader of the PRBO Wetlands Ecology Division; and Dr. Drew Talley, Research Coordinator, San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. This workshop is jointly sponsored by NOAA through the Elkhorn Slough and San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserves.

This is a beginner's level workshop for those wanting an introduction to tidal wetlands. We will follow this workshop in Fall 2005 with a more advanced workshop exploring tidal wetland management. There is no charge for the workshop. Lunch will be provided.

Registration for this workshop is being handled online. Deadline is Aug. 8th!
