Joint Flood Protection-Watershed Restoration Workshop

A joint workshop for Bay Area flood protection agencies and watershed groups and related interests will be held Thursday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Room 1 on the second floor of the Elihu M. Harris State Office Building, 1515 Clay Street, Oakland.

There is no cost. But because lunch will be provided, please RSVP to me at cmorrison@morrisonassociates.com no later than June 13 so we can plan for you.

The workshop will help watershed groups and others interested in restoration and other types of projects to become more acquainted with the objectives of flood protection agencies so that together they may develop mutually beneficial integrated projects that also may improve eligibility for a variety of funding programs, including the second round of Prop 84 grants expected in early 2012. Flood protection agencies also will better understand the roles of the watershed and other groups.

The tentative agenda includes the following:

- An introduction to the languages of watershed folks and flood protection engineers.

- A briefing on what watershed management and restoration is all about and how it works with local watershed groups.

- A briefing on the long-term vision of flood protection and its collaborative efforts in developing integrated projects.

- An update on the Bay Area Integrated Regional Water Management Plan and potential funding sources such as Propositions 84 and 1E and more.

- Case studies from the Bay Area's four subregions showing how integrated projects are a win-win for all interests.

- Facilitated subregion break-out sessions where watershed and flood protection folks can meet and determine the next steps to work at a more local level.
