Napa Solano Audubon Saturday Bird Walk

Sat, Sep 25th 2021, 8:00am - 12:00pm
2 Eucalyptus Drive, American Canyon

Tom Slyker, our Vice President, and Patti Heidl, our Membership Chair will be leading the bird walk this week. As a result, we’re changing the location to American Canyon Wetlands, a great place that Tom knows like the back of his hand!  He visits American Canyon Wetlands every week to monitor changing bird populations for our Bird Seasons Citizen Science Project!

OVERVIEW
This Saturday, September 25, 2021, beginning at 8:00 a.m. we will be meandering along the trails of American Canyon Wetlands. Migration is still occurring and interesting birds are moving through. Many warblers and passerines are still being seen in the Eucalyptus Groves, many shorebirds are still in the mudflats and waterfowl are returning. American Canyon Wetlands is one of our premier spots in Napa County and fun birds are always observed. Green-winged Teal, Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintail, Great and Snowy Egrets, Long-billed Dowitchers, Long-billed Curlews, Marbled Godwits, and Black-bellied Plovers are some of the waterfowl and shorebirds we’re likely to see.  The Eucalyptus Groves have Townsend’s and Yellow Warblers and the Yellow-rumps are beginning to return as well. A Peregrine Falcon was spotted earlier this week, along with a White-tailed Kite, a Kestrel, and some Red-tailed Hawks … and if we’re lucky we’ll see a Bald Eagle.  We’ll keep our eyes on the lookout for Hummingbirds, Bluebirds, and Flycatchers as well.

WEATHER (PLEASE READ)
The temperature will be chilly in the morning.  Be sure to wear a jacket and dress in layers as it will start to warm up by noon.  Also bring water and a snack. We will take it easy and meander along a level, mostly paved 1 1/2 mile loop.  Binoculars are a must. If you have access to a scope bring it.   Please wear comfortable hiking or tennis shoes.

COVID REGULATIONS
For Everyone’s Safety, we ask that all participants on NSAS Walks and Field Trips be vaccinated from Covid 19 and should wear masks when in close proximity. (Children under the age of 12, who are not eligible for vaccinations, are asked to wear masks at all times.) In accordance with National Audubon Policies, Field Trips will be taken at your own own risk, and participants must sign our Release of Liability and Covid Waiver.

EBIRD TRACKING
Many of us are avid E-birders and like to track the species on the walks. Tom will keep a comprehensive list of all birds we find during the walk. You are more than free to keep your personal list but if you would like to avoid looking at your phone screen and keeping numbers, he will gladly keep the list and share it with whoever wants it. Just let him know at the end of the walk and he will get your Ebird information.
