Hike the History Trail (and Bale Mill) with Napa Open Space

Sat, Jun 19th 2021, 10:00am - 1:00pm
Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Need a Reason to hike the only History Trail in the Napa Open Space District? How about the fact that this is only our second in-person hike of 2021?

Not a good enough reason? How about the chance to learn about Reason Tucker, rescuer of the Donner Party, and one of the founders of Napa Valley’s first church? Join our interpreters of human and natural history, Jay and Steve, who will help link the former church site and pioneer cemetery to the Bale Grist Mill, which is still operational, and try to bring the late 1840s and 1850s to life!

This hike includes a short loop around the cemetery and a 1 mile hike from the end of day use in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park to the Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park. There is a steep section at the beginning of the History Trail– otherwise the hike is moderate. The hike will last about 3 hours and will include an operational tour of the grist mill.  The mill has a new flume and a new wheel thanks to our own Rob Grassi and maintenance staff—we can’t wait to take it for a spin and hope you can be there with us!  Day use fees will be waived for both parks.

*Please note: Participants will be expected to return along the History Trail on their own.  Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a lunch!
