NSAS Bird Walk with the Audobon Society

Sat, Apr 3rd 2021, 8:00am - 12:00pm
John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, 2295 Streblow Drive, Napa, CA 94558

I am happy to announce that our weekly Saturday walks will be commencing. I am excited to see you all and getting out to enjoy the natural world as we all should be doing. It is said that birding increases people's happiness and that's what I aim to do.

As these walks begin again, be aware that even with the vaccine, I am still enacting and following COVID safety guidelines with our group.

  • Masks will be mandatory to attend,
  • We will do our best to maintain social distancing to the best of our abilities.
  • If you are sick, or feel unwell, please do not attend. I promise that there will be more walks in the future and the birds will be there!
  • There may be a walk cap for certain locations. I will let everyone know when or if this will occur. The walks will be capped at 15 attendees on these days.

Location: Kennedy Park

This Saturday, April 3, 2021, we will be exploring Kennedy Park in Napa and exploring parts of the Napa River estuary. Spring migration is just revving up, our winter residents are beginning to leave, and we will never know what we will find. We will be checking out the park, the Napa River and the pond.

Kennedy Park is paved road with parks and trees tracing the course of the Napa River as it meanders its way into the Bay. Marshes line the exterior boundaries of the park. Napa College forms its eastern border and a golf course to the south. We explore the many aspects of the park. We are likely to see Western Gull, California Gull, Black-Crowned Night-Heron, Western Bluebird, Song Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat, Song Sparrow, Snowy Egret, White-Breasted Nuthatch Great Egret, American Avocet and a plethora of waterfowl and shorebirds in the mudflats. Black Rail is an uncommon, but not unheard of, addition in the marshes. Osprey, White-Tailed Kite, Northern Harrier, Red-Tailed Hawk and Red-Shouldered Hawk patrol the skies and marshes. Great Horned Owl tends to hang out in the redwoods. On rare occasions, Bald Eagle has been observed on the River.

Weather: The temperature will reach the mid-70s, but overcast and breezy, so please bring water. We will be walking in mostly open space in full sun, so please remain hydrated and wear sunscreen. Please wear comfortable, yet sturdy, hiking or tennis shoes. The park is mostly paved but some areas could be rough to travel over.

*NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions and for the safety of attendees, there will no longer be any NSAS carpooling from Sweeney's Sports for the foreseeable future. If you wish to travel together from your own houses or location, please do so at your own risk.

Please meet near the boat launch no later than 0810.
