CreekSpeak: Exploring the Berryessa Region: A Geology, Nature, and History Tour
Join Putah Creek Council's fourth and final CreekSpeak talk of 2020 on Thursday, October 15, 2020.
Marc Hoshovsky, a local naturalist, will explain the fascinating geological diversity of the Berryessa Region and upper Putah Creek watershed, and unravel how that landscape formed over millions of years. This is the focus of a newly released book, Exploring the Berryessa Region: A Geology, Nature, and History Tour, which he co-authored with Eldridge and Judy Moores, Peter Schiffman, and Bob Schneider to interpret part of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument.
Marc will tell a simplified story of how this region, close to Davis, evolved over geological time. It’s a remarkable submarine tectonic subduction zone now exposed on land, full of thrust faults, ophiolites, turbidites, serpentine mud volcanoes, and more. He will take us on a virtual tour to locations where these features occur in the watershed. And chances are he will insert a few fun stories about local history and ecology along the way.
Marc is a retired naturalist living in Davis, California. He spent 30 years working for state government on endangered species habitat conservation planning throughout the state of California. He has a B.S. degree in Geology from Utah State University and a B.S. degree in Geology with a M.S. in Ecology from Humboldt State University.
