Ways of Tracking Birds and What May be Learned

Thu, Sep 11th 2014, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Florence Douglas Senior Center 333 Amador St Vallejo, CA

Wildlife biologist, Kyle Spragens, will explore the variety of methods biologists use to track and follow the activities of individual birds. Researchers of avian ecology have benefited from a variety of methods to follow the activities of individual birds in order to glean new information and insights about bird behavior. In recent years, the types of methodologies have expanded and allowed a whole new level of insights that had not before been realized. This presentation offers an overview of marking types, considerations of logistics required when applying each of these methods, and the information provided using examples from marking projects conducted by the USGS San Francisco Bay Estuary Field Station in Vallejo, California.

Kyle Spragens is a Wildlife Biologist for the USGS San Francisco Bay Estuary Field Station in Vallejo, California. Kyle’s research interests focus on migratory ecology of waterbirds, with special emphasis on waterfowl. Kyle returns to the San Francisco Bay region after spending the past three years as lead Waterfowl Biologist for the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge in western Alaska.

This general meeting/program will begin at 7 p.m. with 15 minutes of social activities and refreshments, followed by announcements and the presentation. The meeting will be held at Florence Douglas Senior Center, 333 Amador St., in Vallejo, CA. See our website for directions www.napasolanoaudubon.com
