August CreekSpeak: Studying the Return of Salmon to Putah Creek - Virtual talk!

Thu, Aug 27th 2020, 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Mackenzie Miner from UC Davis Fangue Labatory will present on the return of Chinook salmon to Putah Creek and the many ways we can study the process of reestablishment in an urban ecosystem. In the past, native fish populations in Putah Creek have declined as a result of dam construction, drought and water reductions; however, since the implementation of a new water use plan, under the Creek's Accord, we have observed a resurgence of native fishes. With help from our collaborators, UC Davis Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology Department has been monitoring salmon activity in the creek since 2016. Since then increasing numbers of returning adult salmon and out-migrating juveniles have been observed. Join us to learn more about ongoing research efforts and salmon ecology in Putah Creek.

Mackenzie Miner is a staff member at The Fangue Laboratory at UC Davis. The lab studies how changes in environmental conditions, like temperature, affect an animal's physiology. Focused on aquatic species, their research centers around environments that are naturally extreme or stressed due to human intervention.

CreekSpeak events are at 7PM on the third Thursday of the month (July through October), held via Zoom (in order to accommodate social distancing guidelines). These talks are free to Putah Creek Council members and open to the public (registration will be capped at 100 people). A $5 donation is requested from those who have not yet joined the Council.
