CA Environmental Literacy Initiative

Environmental literacy is a critical outcome for California’s K–12 students. As we prepare for this unprecedented school year, innovative leadership from county offices of education, districts, and community partners can ensure that students have equitable access to relevant environmental learning experiences.

Designed by and for California educational leaders and administrators, this free, five-part webinar series will showcase effective strategies for supporting environmental literacy, both during the pandemic crisis and beyond.

Based on our “Call to Action” tool, these webinars will illustrate how to support teachers in delivering culturally-responsive, multi-disciplinary, standards-based curriculum through distance, in-school, and community-based learning. Expert guest speakers will present lessons learned from leading-edge exemplar initiatives, with a focus on providing access for students who have not historically benefited from high quality environmental literacy opportunities.

Each 60 minute webinar will begin with a 30 minute presentation of promising practices and curated, field-tested tools and resources. The second half will allow for facilitated discussions, networking, and addressing problems of practice.

By incorporating environmental literacy into county, district, or schools’ continuous improvement, Learning Continuity and Attendance Plans, LCAPs, or Site Plans, we can ensure that we remain on track to graduate youth who are connected with nature, civically engaged, and empowered to lead solutions to future challenges.
