Trail Hiking, Building and Maintenance

Many of us enjoy our local trails. Particularly well known in our own "backyard" are the Cold Canyon, Blue Ridge, Frog Pond, and Cache Creek Ridge trails. More recently many have hiked the newly constructed Valley Vista Trail. And, now Annie's Trail at the headwaters of Cold Canyon is nearing completion.

Hiking the Cold Canyon Trail is an egalitarian experience. One meets people of all ages, shapes and sizes: groups of teens, families, people of all ethnicities, and folks from Roseville, Vacaville, Woodland, Davis, Winters, Sacramento, the Bay Area, and other towns who come for short strolls or long hikes completing the full 5-mile loop. It is always nice to say hello to your fellow travelers. Conservative estimates are that over 10,000 people visit Stebbins Cold Canyon UC Reserve each year.

At times I meet folks with loppers trimming the brush back for others to enjoy the trail. I once met a kind Hispanic man digging out the spring by the bridge. That spring has water in the driest years.

It is really important to do trail maintenance correctly.
