ICARE
The Institute for Conservation Advocacy, Research and Education’s (ICARE) mission is to restore and conserve the biological integrity and ecosystems health of watersheds the Napa River estuary and the greater San Francisco Bay Area through science-based advocacy, research and education. The keystone of this effort is a multidisciplinary team of experts dedicated to maintaining cutting edge conservation science, policy and outreach. We specialize in innovative, collaborative projects that move restoration and conservation beyond the status quo and achieve real improvements on the ground in the protection of plants, animals and fish from the headwaters to the confluence within socioeconomic realities.
Education and Outreach
ICARE educates the public about the unique Napa River watershed and Bay Delta estuary through a wide array of teaching approaches to reach all socioeconomic levels of the community. Indeed, we developed and made available a ‘Healthy Watershed Toolkit’ for clean water and healthy communities that will be broadly distributed to the public. ICARE also develops and offers creative K-12 educational curriculums and college courses that relate to bay area watershed monitoring and restoration
Land Protection and Easements
ICARE efforts are to improve local, regional and state land uses and water policies to conserve and protect aquatic and terrestrial species.
Restoration, Enhancement and Implementation
ICARE has been invloved with many land owners throughout the community to improve and enhance their properties. The Suscol Creek Collaborative Restoration Project is an example of ICARE and land owners working together to create stewardships.
Watershed Monitoring
ICARE's watershed montoring programs include The Benthic Macroinvertebrate Study & The Steelhead Snorkel Survey. We monitor the health of the Napa River through rigorous scientific adaptive management and reliable data collection to improve water quality and quantity.
Politics & Advocacy
ICARE advocates for protection and conservation of aquatic and terrestrial habitats in the Napa River Watershed
Organization Facts, History, or Background
The Institute for Conservation Advocacy, Research and Education (ICARE), a newly formed nonprofit organization, is pleased to present the Healthy Watershed Program (see website) to protect and conserve plants, fish and other wildlife in the Napa River estuary and greater Bay Delta. The goal of this collaborative watershed program is to develop a comprehensive, long term restoration project in the Napa River basin that can be replicated in any watershed. To that end, our pilot project on the Napa River uses research, education and advocacy to outline historic conditions, current realities and trends, and future options for the watershed.
