People Working Together for the Watershed

Protecting the watersheds of Napa County cannot succeed without the participation of the citizens who work, play, and live in the watershed. Although there are many actions an individual can take to protect our natural resources, watershed protection is best accomplished through the cumulative effects of cooperative community awareness and involvement. Building partnerships and working jointly to preserve our watersheds is an essential part of the effort to provide long term protection of our watersheds’ natural systems.

In Napa County there is a strong tradition of cooperative land stewardship. Increasingly, landowners, government agencies, conservation organizations, and individual citizens are working together to find ways to better understand and protect our watershed lands. For example, landowners are organizing themselves into stewardship groups that work to protect their local watersheds. With assistance from the Napa County Resource Conservation District, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), and other public and private agencies, participants devise their own voluntary watershed management plans and implement collaborative projects such as monitoring creek water flows, conducting wildlife and habitat studies, and improving fish habitat. Presently there are over ten stewardship groups either operating or in formation in Napa County.

Working together provides a means to relate concerns and interests among the community and helps promote creativity in watershed planning and management. The RCD and the NRCS are available to provide assistance in facilitating cooperative watershed protection efforts. For more information, visit www.naparcd.org.
